this morning. it's a big development in the fight against syria and a new level of u.s. involvement. we just learned within the past few hours the defense secretary leon panetta signed an order sending two patriot missile batteries to turkey. that's to assist that nation in defending against any pollible military action by syria. this move was expected as the civil war in syria destabilizes the assad regime with each passing day. in addition to this, 400 u.s. troops are going to turkey. they will be deployed to operate the missile batteries. cnn's nick payton walsh has the development. >> reporter: good morning. 400 personnel will be accompanying the batteries. let me give you history. over the past two months, we saw sporadic exchanges of fire across the border. syrian military firing into turkey causing often destruction and death. turkey often responding. that brought about this request to nato for patriot missile batteries. they're supposed to be there. this particular type better at taking out missiles in the sky rather than taking down aircraft. but this move part of a nato response. a

for the last few days. let's start with you. this is a fast-moving story. give us the latest perimeters of what appears -- i emphasize appears to be the start of a deal. >> well, it has been coming closer together, so we are told. the question is what will the president be saying, and senior advisors here as well as senators i've spoken to say they do not expect that he is making any nounment of a deal, so we'll wait for the white house to determine that for sure. what we've been hearing is that they have moved off the issue of taxes and have been more focused on the nature of spending cuts. with republicans and democrats in two different places. democrats would like to delay the automatic spending cuts that would kick in at midnight for two years. republicans would like to delay them only for three months, and then get some additional deaf set reduction with those cuts would kick in. the opportunity there is to then decide instead of across the board cuts, could they reach some agreement on more specialized cuts that both parties could live with. that's a very difficult thing to do, and someth

tell us about the meeting at the white house today? >> well, we've heard different takes where you hear everybody has a different perspective on what happened depending on which party they're in. the big takeaway is everybody left grieving on the next step, which is that the senate will confer, the two leaders will confer and try to hammer out an agreement that democrats and republicans can both get on board with this what they will spend their day with tomorrow. we are not going to see or hear a lot of public action tomorrow. then they'll try to sell it to their respective parties on sunday, as you said, they'll try to bring it to a vote maybe sunday night or sometime monday morning in the senate. and at least there's agreement on the next steps, john. it's better than nothing. >> thank you, jessica. it will be a working weekend. the minnesota majority in the house of representatives will of course be key to getting any deal across the finish line.
